Existing homes offer the most opportunity for savings. Most were built when codes were lower. Residents can help identify problems, or at least the symptoms. While some houses may have suffered from neglect, others may never have performed well. Regardless, there are few houses that cannot be improved.

Buying an existing home?

Make energy improvements at time of sale and roll the cost into your mortgage and pay it off over the life of the loan. Let HERS, Inc. identify a package of improvements where the monthly utility savings would exceed the added monthly mortgage payment. As utility costs increase, the monthly savings would increase every year you lived in the house. Find out more about Energy Efficient Mortgages!

Improve the home in which you are living

It can start with an interview on the phone describing your house and the problems you are having. If warranted, the next step can be an energy audit. This can range from a simple walk-through where the client takes notes to a comprehensive diagnostic audit of the “house as a system” complete with blower door and duct leakage testing. A final audit report includes an assessment of existing conditions with recommendations for improvements and their estimated costs, savings and payback.

It can stop there, or HERS, Inc. can recommend contractors, specify work, review bids, oversee improvements and, when completed,  test and verify the improvements were performed as specified.

How much can duct sealing save?

Average winter heating savings of 32% in heat pump houses and 19% in gas heated houses was documented in a study funded by the Arkansas Energy Office.

The most common hidden problem in existing houses is duct leakage.

The biggest return on investment is sealing ducts!

All duct systems leak. A little leakage may be acceptable, but a lot is not.  Have your duct system tested! Find out how much it leaks and where and what it would take to fix it and get it fixed!
